‘I made a fool of myself’ – Norris apologizes to Piastri and McLaren

Lando Norris says he made a fool of himself when he hit Oscar Piastri late in the Canadian Grand Prix and apologized to McLaren and his teammate instantly.

The two McLarens were fighting over fourth place in the final five laps of the race in Montreal, with Norris overtaking down the inside of the hairpin and then Piastri regaining the spot into the final chicane. Exiting close behind, Norris slipstreamed Piastri but then ran into the back of his teammate on the run to Turn 1, sending himself into the barrier and out of the race.

“Just didn’t expect to pass Oscar on the outside into Turn 1,” Norris said. “I should never have gone for it; it’s my complete hindsight thing. I thought he was starting to drift a little bit to the right, so there was an opportunity to go the left. But there was way too much risk, especially on my teammate. Happy nothing happened to him, and I paid the price for my mistake.

“I do [need to apologize], because our rule number one is to not make contact with my teammate, and that’s what I did. McLaren is my family, I race for them. Every single weekend, I try and do well for them, more than I often try and do well for myself.

“When I let them down like this, and when I make a fool of myself in a moment like today, I have a lot of regret in something like that. I’m not proud of that, and I feel bad and I feel like I let down my team. That’s always the worst feeling. Of course, I only really need to apologize to all of them and Oscar as well.”

Piastri appreciated the way Norris took responsibility, but the Briton said he would have understood if his teammate was more angry about the fact contact was made at all.

“Of course he’s not going to be happy altogether with what happened,” Norris said. “I wouldn’t be either if it was the other way around. I owe him an apology for taking such a risk. He raced me fairly until that point, and close, and that’s what you want. No one did anything wrong here – just myself.

“I’ve let down the team, so that’s going to stay with me for a little while. At the same time, part of moving on is trying to put it behind you and crack on with the next weekend.

“We go back to the factory and I go and say hello to the whole team. I’m sure that’s not going to be a nice moment for me because of something like today. The best part of it is that nothing happened to Oscar. It’s a shame I have to say that; that was the best part of it.”
