NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his immediate family were among seven killed when their private jet crashed at Statesville Regional Airport on Thursday morning.
The Cessna C550 business jet owned by Biffle was attempting to land when it crashed and erupted into a fireball at around 10:20am local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. A National Transportation Safety Board investigation is underway.
Speaking during a press conference in the hours after the crash, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell confirmed that there had been fatalities, but did not identify how many, nor who were among the deceased.
U.S. Congressman Richard Hudson (R, N.C.) then released a statement via social media announcing that Biffle, his wife and children were among those killed, which was later confirmed by NASCAR.
“NASCAR is devastated by the tragic loss of Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, son Ryder, Craig Wadsworth and Dennis and Jack Dutton in a fatal plane crash,” read a statement from the series.
“Greg was more than a champion driver, he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many. His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport.
“On the track, Greg’s talent and tenacity earned him championships in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, as well as numerous wins and accolades in the NASCAR Cup Series.
